TITLES

Sensei – instructor

Shihan-Dai – Lower Master Instructor

Shihan – Master Instructor

Dai-Shihan – Above Master

Soke – Grandmaster, president

Sokeshodai – First Generation Grandmaster.

Soke - Grandmaster, President.

Dai-Soke - Great Grandmaster

Soke-Dai - Vice President, Under Grandmaster

Kyoju - Professor.

 

KANJI

西 - Western (Seiyo)

森林 - Pine forest (Shorin)

様式 - Style (Ryu)

空手 – empty hand (Karate)

経路 - path

式 – way (Do)

古 - old (Kobudo)

 

Dojo terminology

Gedan Barai – downblock

Jodan Uke – High (rising) Block

Ude Uke – Outward Block

Uchi Uke – Inward Block

Oi-zuki – straight punch

Gyaku-zuki – opposite hand punch

Geri – Kick

Mae Geri – front Kick

Yoko Geri – Side Kick

Zenkutsu Dachi – Front Stance

Kokutsu Dachi – Back Stance

Kiba Dacki – Horse-riding Stance

Neko Ashi Dachi – Cat Stance

Counting to 10 – Ichi, Ni, San, Shi, Go Roku, Shichi, Hachi, Ku, Ju.

Kamaete (kamae): Assume fighting position.

Hajime: Begin!

Rei: Bow with respect

Seiza: Assume kneeling position.

Mawate: Turn around, reverse direction.

Yame: Stop

Yoi: Assume ready/relax position.

Hai: affirmation, as in 'yes'.

Obi: The belt worn in the dojo.

Seiretsu: Command to line up.

Undo: Exercises - calisthenics.

Junbi undo: preparation exercises.

kubi no undo: Neck exercises.

Ude no undo: arm exercises.

Ashi no undo: leg exercises.

 

Beginning Ceremony

*Seiza - kneel

*Otage ni rei - Bow to one another - to show respect for all.

*Shomen ni rei - bow to the dojo front wall of respect and lineage.

*Sensei (Soke, Shihan, etc) ni rei - bow to your instructor.

*Kiritsu - stand

 

Ending Ceremony

*Seiza - kneel

*Mokutso - meditation

*Yamae - Stop (meditating)

*Dojo kun - announce the monthly dojo philosophy

*Otage ni rei - Bow to one another - to show respect for all.

*Shomen ni rei - bow to the dojo front wall of respect and lineage.

*Sensei (Soke, Shihan, etc) ni rei - bow to your instructor.
